I just looked on Yahoo Maps, and they suggest taking Highway 138 to I-15 south to I-215 south to I-10 east.
If you follow WoE's advice about going by way of Barstow and I-40, you can take US-93 into Phoenix and not have to go all the way to Flagstaff.

Bring snacks and some money because there are lots of In-N-Out Burger joints on the way! :d And yes, you might want to stop by rest areas (not in California but in Arizona). Also, Barstow and Needles are great areas to stop for lunch or something, because they are both oases in the middle of the desert. Kingman and Williams/Flagstaff in Arizona are just good places for bathroom breaks.

do most of your driving in the early morning or evening to save on your a/c .. before you go, get new belts and hoses or at least have them checked. Take the 58 via mojave ( I prefer that to the pearblossom road) make the I 40 connection in barstow then make the I-17 in Flagstaff.. carry an ice chest if you can filled with cold bottled water. the biggest problem California has is that it's not really rest stop friendly. Arizona is getting better though.

or you can head into los angeles and take 10 all the way to phoenix .. just map it first for the lesser mileage .. though it might be about the same.

not many rest stops, more are closing all the time to save money. It's about an 8 hour drive, the hottest part of the day is about 2 or 3, so leave about 4 am and get there before the real heat (115 to 120) sets in. Bring an ice chest with plenty of water and snacks, and watch your engine light.
