a bale of hay is the same for any horse, or any animal. depends on what kind of hay..just go to your local feed store. in SoCal, where i’m hay, hay’s usually between $10-$15. depends on what kind. for i mini, i’d say about half-flake per feeding, unless it has special needs (more/less) and i’m guessing theres usually about 12-15 flakes in a bale…so there ya go. haha

It depends on the season and the type but a 1000 pound horse eats about a bale a week. Are you going to feed oat, forage, alfalfa or grass hay? Minis are cheap to feed. I’m paying $12-14 for a bale of alfalfa.

Depending on where you live the cost of a bale of hay varies a lot. Also the time of year. Like right now hay is a little cheaper in Northern CA because local people have bought hay off the big ranches and are selling it cheaper than the feed stores at $11.00 or cheaper a bale. The feed stores around here are still about $15.00 a bale. I’ve never had a minnie but I’d guess they eat half as much as a horse (about a flake a day) so a bale would last you about two weeks. So I guess you’d only need 2 bales a month which would run you between $22.00 to $30.00 a month.

I dont know what kind of horses some of the rest of you have, but in my experience my horses eat a lot more than 2 flakes a day! the current best for horses is to let them have free choice grass hay and then feed whatever grain and supplements you feel are necessary. I try to leave hay out for my horse at all times and she eats 6-7 flakes, from a normal small bale, a day and maintains a good weight with normal maintenance work. These bales feed her for about 3 days. she is 1000 lbs and is not on pasture. As the others have said I would assume a mini would eat less, maybe 3-4 flakes a day. Hay here in colorado is between $6-10 a bale, and in vermont is closer to $4. so it depends where you live and what you can find. craigslist usually lists hay for sale in your area. i would think a mini would eat around 2 bales a week if it didnt have grass to eat too, less or none if you have pasture that it can be out on all the time.

A hay bale stays the same size no matter what you feed it to…
In PA, you can get decent grass hay for $2.50-$5.00
    It’s cheap here (:
