Is The Passing The Cbest Enough To Be A Sub?

5 Comments 03 February 2010

I recently passed the Cbest, I also have 73 units, and an AA degree, im working on getting my BA, I’m curious if that is enough to be a substitute teacher. I live in the LA county area, around Quartz hill and Palmdale. Im also a 23 year old male, kind of immature, i play video games etc. do you think they can hold that against me?

You don’t need a college degree, at least not on the East Coast where I live. You just have to be 18.
If you want to have an advantage over the other subs and get paid more, you should take the Praxis I and also it’ll help if you earn a few college credits.

To work as a substitute teacher, at least in most cities in California that I know of require a bachelors degree. Why don’t you contact the local school district and find out what the requirements are?

You need a B.A. and at least a 123 passing score on the CBEST to be a sub in CA.
You passed the CBEST, though you still need to earn your Bachelors of Arts degree.

I have taken the CBEST twice and still have not passed it with a successful score. I am thinking that this test is a biased test. Is it? I have a B.A. Degree also. I have been working in education for the past 15 years, even before I received my B.A. as an instructional aide here in California. Can someone tell me why this CBEST is so important here in California and is this test biased towards people of color and for schools that are in poor districts?
