Is there a place that has really low rent in CA, but is in a safe area (and not super-hot desert like Palmdale or something)? Something not really near a big city is fine, though
I would appreciate any help finding this.

Hayward/Union City are cheaper than Fremont/Newark/Milpitas. Not bad, depending on where you live. I work in Hayward for an apartment community that is professionally managed. It really depends on what kind of budget you are working with. I can tell you the place I work is charging around $900 for a 1 bed right now.
Fremont/newark/milpitas. It’s in the bay area, relatively cheap(depending on which districts you rent houses in) and you can take BART to get to the SF airport. Plus the weather is great.
