If you can try avoiding the 405 (by using other routes like the 101 and 110) then you should be fine.

There are no short cuts or quick routes. They are all extremely bad. Your friend has to find a job in the Lancaster area or move to the Long Beach area. Otherwise they have to expect to be spending 2 hours or more each way in their car.
I would agree with Mad Dog if you can avoid the 405 then great. Unfortunately I don’t think the 710 or 5 is much better. So you will more than likely do the 14 to the 405.
14 south to 5 south to 710 south.
That’s not going to be fast, but it’s the shortest and quickest route.
